WATER RESOURCES ACT 1991

NATURAL RESOURCES WALES FISHERIES BYELAWS (2017)

Notice is hereby given that the Natural Resources Body for Wales intends to apply the Welsh Minister for Natural Resources for confirmation of byelaws made under the Water Resources Act 1991.

The byelaws will:-

• Shorten the netting season by starting net fisheries no earlier than 1st May

• End the netting season on the 31st July

• All salmon catch and release on net and rod fisheries

• Sea trout catch and release on vulnerable rivers before 1st May

• 60cm maximum size limit for sea trout

• Method restrictions (bait, barbless hooks and trebles) so that released fish have a good chance of survival

The byelaws are intended to protect vulnerable stocks, while maintaining many of the important benefits associated with the fisheries.

The byelaws will apply to all Welsh rivers except the border rivers; Dee, Severn and Wye which will be subject to a later consultation.

The controls would be in place for 10 years, with a comprehensive review into their effectiveness after five years.

Copies of the byelaws have been deposited at the offices at the addresses shown here and will be open to inspection free of charge from Monday to Friday during normal office hours from the date of publication of this notice for 84 days until 14th November 2017.

During the same period a copy of the byelaws will be supplied by these offices on demand free of charge to any person or by emailing Fisheries.Wales@cyfoethnaturiolcymru.gov.uk.

A person who wishes to object to the confirmation of any of the byelaws must send a copy of their objection in writing to: David Mee, “Salmon and Sea Trout Byelaws”, Natural Resources Wales, Maes Newydd, Llandarcy, Neath Port Talbot SA10 6JQ

Or email: Fisheries.Wales@cyfoethnaturiolcymru.gov.uk

Objections must be received no later than 14th November 2017.
