Company insolvency statistics - August 2025
The August 2025 company insolvency stats for England and Wales have been published by The Insolvency Service, together with related figures for Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Company insolvency statistics for England and Wales – August 2025
After seasonal adjustment there were 2,048 company insolvencies in August 2025. This was 2% lower than in July 2025, but 6% higher than August 2024. The decrease of 2% compared to July 2025 is less than the average absolute change of 11% between consecutive months over the past three years.
In August 2025 there were:
- 1,600 creditors’ voluntary liquidations (CVLs)
- 311 compulsory liquidations
- 121 administrations
- 16 company voluntary arrangements (CVAs)
- 0 receiverships
CVLs
In August 2025, CVLs accounted for 78% of all company insolvencies. The number of CVLs increased by 1% in July 2025 and was 5% higher than August 2024.
Compulsory liquidations
The number of compulsory liquidations was 9% lower than in July 2025, but 15% higher than in August 2024.
Administrations
The number of administrations was 17% lower than in July 2025, but 6% higher than in August 2024. However, the average monthly number of administrations so far in 2025 is slightly lower than the 2024 monthly average.
CVAs
The number of CVAs was 33% higher than in July 2025 and 20% lower than in August 2024. Numbers remain low compared to historical levels. CVAs are not seasonally adjusted due to low volumes.
Receivership appointments
There were no receivership appointments in August 2025. Receivership appointments are now rare with only four in the past 12 months ending August 2025.
Insolvency rate statistics for England and Wales – August 2025
The company liquidation rate in the 12 months to August 2025 was 52.6 per 10,000 companies on the effective register in England and Wales. This corresponds to 1 in 190 companies entering insolvency.
Company insolvencies by industry in England and Wales – August 2025
The three industries (in accordance with SIC 2007) that experienced the highest number of insolvencies in the 12 months to August 2025 were:
- construction (3,973 insolvencies, 17% of cases with industry captured)
- wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (3,673 insolvencies, 16% of cases with industry captured)
- accommodation and food service activities (3,371 insolvencies, 14% of cases with industry captured)
Company insolvency statistics for Scotland – August 2025
The Accountant in Bankruptcy (AiB), Scotland’s Insolvency Service, administers company insolvency in Scotland.
In August 2025 there were 95 company insolvencies, which was 7% lower than the number in August 2024. Of the total company insolvencies in Scotland, there were:
- 47 CVLs
- 43 compulsory liquidations
- 5 administrations
- 0 CVAs
- 0 receivership appointments
Historically, compulsory liquidations were the most common type of company insolvency in Scotland. However, since August 2020, numbers of CVLs have remained higher than numbers of compulsory liquidations.
Company insolvency statistics for Northern Ireland – August 2025
In August 2025 there were 12 company insolvencies in Northern Ireland, which was 9% higher than in August 2024. Of the total company insolvencies, there were:
- 1 compulsory liquidation
- 8 CVLs
- 3 administrations
- 0 CVAs
- 0 receivership appointments
