The Department of Health has made a Statutory Rule entitled "The Human Medicines (Amendment Relating to Original Pack Dispensing) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2024"(S.R. 2024 No. 125), which came into operation on 4th June 2024.

This rule amends the Human Medicines Regulations 2012 ("the 2012 Regulations") to require manufacturers original full pack dispensing of valproate-containing medicines in Northern Ireland and to enable pharmacists in Northern Ireland to supply up to 10% more than or less than the amount on a prescription of medicines other than those containing valproate, so that they can dispense a manufacturers original full pack instead of splitting the pack, known as original pack dispensing (OPD).
