Islington Council

PROPERTY LICENSING CONSULTATION

Islington Council has launched a public consultation to gather views on proposals to renew and expand its property licensing schemes.

The consultation focuses on two proposals:

1. Re-designating the Borough-Wide Additional Licensing Scheme for a further 5-years:

The current scheme, which applies to houses or flats shared by three or four unrelated people from different households, including the common parts in some circumstances is set to expire in February 2026.

2. Expanding the Selective Licensing Scheme:

Currently covering Finsbury Park, Hillrise, and Tollington wards, this scheme applies to privately rented homes occupied by one or two people or a single family. The council is proposing to extend it to nine additional wards: Barnsbury, Caledonian, Tufnell Park, Mildmay, Highbury, Junction, Laycock, Canonbury, and Clerkenwell.

For full details on the proposals including proposed fees, conditions and to respond to the consultation please visit: https://www.letstalk.islington.gov.uk/renting

The consultation ends on 13th April 2025. Should the Council decide after considering the evidence and the consultation responses that a new additional licensing scheme and / or that further wards would benefit from Selective licensing, then the earliest the new schemes may come into effect is January 2026.
