LONDON BOROUGH OF LAMBETH
Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 (as amended)
Town and Country Planning Act 1990 (as amended)

Notice is hereby given that the Council of the London Borough of Lambeth, in pursuance of powers under section 70 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 (as amended), made the following designations of new or extended Conservation Areas within the London Borough of Lambeth on 12th October 1998:   (i) The new Poets Corner Conservation Area (C.A. No. 52) SE24—which includes: Chaucer Road (Nos. 1-9, 27-67 and 2-70), Spenser Road (Nos. 1-55 and 2-64), Shakespeare Road (Nos. 3-71 and 2-72), Milton Road (Nos. 1-65 and 2-70), Railton Road (Nos. 94-106) and Dulwich Road (Nos. 3-69 odds).   (ii) An extension to the South Bank Conservation Area (C.A. No. 38) SE1 to include Bernie Spain Gardens (north of Upper Ground) and the River Thames directly in front of the gardens up to the borough boundary with Southwark and the City of London).   The objective of designation is to preserve or enhance the character or appearance of areas of special architectural or historic interest, as distinct from individual buildings, to control developments in such areas and to stimulate and encourage measures to improve the environment. The primary effects of conservation area status are that the demolition of certain buildings is brought within conservation area control and consent must first be sought from the planning authority; that it becomes an offence to cut down, lop or carry out any other works to certain trees within the area without proper consent from the planning authority; and that planning applications for development which, in the opinion of the planning authority, would affect the character or appearance of the conservation area, must be advertised. A plan showing the areas subject to these designations is available for public inspection at the Town Planning Advice Centre, Acre House, 10 Acre Lane, Brixton, London SW2 5SG (opening hours 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.).
