PARISH CHURCH OF WEST DULWICH, ALL SAINTS

Take note that the Incumbent and Churchwardens of the Parish of West Dulwich, All Saints have petitioned the Consistory Court of the Diocese for the following works for the first stage of the rebuilding and redevelopment of the fire-damaged church, comprising: (a) replacement of roofs, in lead as opposed to slate; (b) demolition of Fellowes-Prynne’s temporary buttresses and wall at the west end; (c) construction of a new west end, incorporating an assembly area (narthex) and access by stairs and lift to the crypt beneath and gallery above; (d) a gallery at the west end, for use by musicians, with the structural capacity to take a pipe-organ at a later date and a mezzanine floor beneath; and gantries running immediately above the arches between the nave and aisles from the gallery running to the east end of the nave, so that: (1) lighting equipment can be installed and maintained; (2) additional means of escape from the gallery is provided; and (3) occasional use by musicians is possible. (e) replacement of the remaining damaged floor to the nave and aisles and (subject to approval by the insurers) repairs to the floors remaining in the chancel and Lady Chapel; (f) repairs to fire-damaged brick and stonework to enable the fabric to be made stable and safe. The brick and stonework east of the chancel arch is to be largely repaired to its pre-fire state, with less intervention further westward. It is not proposed to reinstate the tracery and support structure of the screen within the chancel arch at this stage; (g) installation of mechanical and electrical systems. Plans and specifications are available for inspection at All Saints’ Church, next to 165 Rosendale Road, London SE21 8LN by appointment with Mr Michael Dudding, 153 Rosendale Road SE21 8HE (telephone 020-8670 3696). Anyone wishing to comment on or object to the proposal should write to the Diocesan Registrar, Registry Chambers, The Old Deanery, Deans Court, London EC4V 5AA, Ref Southwark, West Dulwich All Saints, no later than 7 November 2002.
