OBJECTS FOR WHICH THE GROUPING IS FORMED:

The objectives of the EEIG include:

• to facilitate high-quality malaria research between Members and build upon the Members’ successful history of collaborative research;

• to combine the Members’ expertise to produce a network of excellence that exploits natural synergies and complimentarities in individual research perspectives, resulting in a more integrated investigational and enhanced approach to the different research questions;

• to enhance and harmonise the experimental approaches to the subject areas in part through the measurable outputs of:

a) the various uses of shared technological platforms;

b) exchange visits;

c) shared PhD students recruited by the EVIMalar PhD school;

d) the creation of shared resources such as databases, reagent banks and agreed protocols for data collection;

e) organisation of international fora wherein members of EVIMalaR and of the broader scientific community might exchange ideas and information;

• to create joint research programmes that will cover all thematic aspects, stretching from basic research on the causative pathogen and its modes of transmission to clinical investigation of pathogenesis;

• to introduce and exploit new scientific concepts and approaches to maintain and define the state of the art in malaria research;

• to initiate further fostering of the next generation of malaria researchers through the establishment of an EVIMalaR fellowship programme;

• to develop outreach programmes and tools for the education of the general public, dissemination of research and network activity information to peer groups around the world, establish further network agreements to create and foster research exchange programmes;

• to provide a management infrastructure that will allow for the co-ordinated pursuit of research, training, management and other associated activities, and support, complement and enhance the work of the Network of Excellence; and

• to identify opportunities for the Members to apply for and obtain research funding.
