THE CAMDEN (PRESCRIBED ROUTES) (NO. 5) TRAFFIC ORDER 2020
Notice is hereby given that the Council of the London Borough of Camden proposes to make the above Order under Sections 6 and 124 and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended. The general nature and effect of the order will be to prohibit certain vehicle movements in Tottenham Court Road and side streets, Gower Street and side streets and in Shaftesbury Avenue and nearby streets.
In general, the measures will limit the daytime use of Tottenham Court Road northbound and southbound by prohibiting through traffic between 8am and 7pm on Mondays to Saturdays. Sections of Tottenham Court Road may be accessed from side streets but traffic will be required not to proceed past certain junctions and turn into those side streets. Uninterrupted north and southbound travel at all times is provided via Gower Street, Bloomsbury Square (east arm) and Bloomsbury Street which become two-way working.
The two eastern arms of Shaftesbury Avenue, north of High Holborn, will be closed to through traffic (i.e. the arm which lie adjacent to nos. 210-236 Shafetsbury Avenue and the arm which lies adjacent to the Shaftesbury Theatre). Access to from premises located at nos. 210 – 236 (even numbers) Shaftesbury Avenue will be provided by a traffic lane running from the junction with West Central Street to the junction with Grape Street. The two western arms of Shaftesbury Avenue will become two-way working to provide a through route for traffic travelling in both directions between the junctions with Bloomsbury Street / New Oxford Street and High Holborn / St. Giles High Street and to provide a continuation of the direct north-south route via Gower Street.
High Holborn will become two-way working between the junctions with St. Giles High Street and Museum Street in order to maintain convenient access to Endell Street in the absence of an available route via the eastern arms of Shaftesbury Avenue.
TOTTENHAM COURT ROAD: restrictions applicable between 8am and 7pm on Mondays to Saturdays:
Northbound – vehicles not to proceed past the junction with Great Russell Street / Hanway Street (vehicles must turn into either street)
vehicles not to proceed past the junction with Howland Street (vehicles must turn left)
Southbound – vehicles not to proceed past the junction with University Street (vehicles must turn left)
vehicles not to proceed past the junction with Alfred Mews (vehicles must turn left)
vehicles not to proceed past the junction with Chenies Street (vehicles must turn left)
All other prescribed movements specified below apply at all times
SHAFTESBURY AVENUE
Vehicular entry prohibited at all times to the section of Shaftesbury Avenue which run south-west from the junction with Coptic Street adjacent to nos. 210-236 Shaftesbury Avenue, and the section which lies adjacent to the Shaftesbury Theatre (the eastern arms). Cyclists are exempted from this restriction. A lane for vehicles will be provided between the junctions with West Central Street and Grape Street along which vehicles must proceed from north-east to south-west only
. Vehicles will be permitted to travel both in both directions along the section of Shaftesbury Avenue which lies adjacent to the Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church and the section which lies adjacent to nos. 219-229 Shaftesbury Avenue.
WEST CENTRAL STREET
Traffic to proceed in one direction only, from the junction with Museum Street towards the junction with Shaftesbury Avenue
HIGH HOLBORN
Vehicular traffic to be permitted to proceed eastwards in High Holborn between the junctions with St. Giles High Street and Museum Street. Vehicles travelling eastwards must not proceed past the junction with Museum Street and must turn left.
