Control of Pollution
Department of the Environment
Following a 12 week public consultation the Department of the Environment has made a Statutory Rule entitled “The Litter (Fixed Penalty) Order (Northern Ireland) 2004” (S.R. 2004 No. 73).
The Rule comes into operation on 31st March 2004.
The rule, which is made under powers conferred by Article 6 (7) of the Litter (Northern Ireland) Order 1994 increases the amount of the fixed penalty for littering and dog fouling offences from £25 to £50. The increase responds to calls from both the public and District Councils for tougher fines to deter people from littering and allowing dog fouling. It also brings Northern Ireland’s fixed penalty into line with recent increases in Great Britain.
Copies of the Rule may be purchased from the Stationery Office Bookshop, 16 Arthur Street, Belfast BT1 4GD.
