Part I

Form of Application for a Generating Licence

1. Full name of applicant:

  Alcan Aluminium UK Limited.

2. Address of the applicant, or in the case of a body corporate, the registered or principal office:

3. Where the applicant is a Company, the full name of the current Directors and the Company’s registered number:

4. Where a holding of 20 per cent. or more of the shares of an applicant is held by a body corporate or partnership or any unincorporated Association carrying on a trade or business with or without a view to profit, the name(s) and address(es) of the holder(s) of such shares shall be provided:

  100 per cent. of the share capital is owned by British Aluminium plc. The address is Chalfont Park, Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire SL9 0QB.

5. Desired date from which the licence is to take effect:

  1st April 1998. (Since 1990 Alcan Aluminium UK Limited has had an exemption from the requirement to hold a generation licence. This exemption is due to expire on 31st March 1998.)

6. The number of generating stations intended to be operated under the licence (if granted):

  Three.

7. A sufficient description adequately specifying the actual or proposed locations of those stations. Descriptions of proposed locations must be sufficient to make clear the nature and extent of the proposed development:

  The Lynemouth Power Station is located near the village of Lynemouth, 22 miles north of Newcastle. The postal address is Lynemouth Power Station, Ashington, Northumberland NE63 9RH.
  Kinlochleven Power Station is located in the village of Kinlochleven, around 20 miles east of Fort William. The postal address is Kinlochleven, Argyll PA40 4SF.
  Lochaber Power Station is located in Fort William. The postal address is Fort William, Ivernesshire PH33 6TH.

8. A description of how those stations, will in each case, be fuelled or driven:

  The Lynemouth generators are driven by steam turbines. The steam is raised in conventional boilers which are fired on pulverised coal. The Kinlochleven and Lochaber Power Stations are hydro powered.

9. The date when any proposed generating stations are expected to be commissioned:

  The Lynemouth Power Station was commissioned in 1972. Kinlochleven Power Station was commissioned in 1909. Lochaber Power Station was commissioned in 1929.

10. The capacity and type of each unit within the generating station (MW):

  Lynemouth: 3 boiler/turbine/generator sets each of which has a capacity of 130MW. Lochaber has a maximum output of 64MW, 60MW of which is direct current, for use by the adjacent smelter. The power station has 12 DC generators, each with a capacity of 7MW. Kinlochleven has a maximum output of 24MW, 10MW of which is potentially available for export. There are 11 DC units, with a combined capacity of 14MW, used for supply to the smelter.

11. A statement of the extent (if any) to which the applicant considers it necessary for powers under Schedule 3 (compulsory acquisition of land etc.) and under Schedule 4 (other powers etc.) to the Act to be given through the licence for which he is applying:

  None required.

12. Details of any licences held, applied for or being applied for by the applicant in respect of the generation, transmission or supply of electricity:

  The applicant has previously been granted all other necessary licences, permits and consents for the operation of the power stations.

  Copies of maps, relevant to this applicant, have been lodged in accordance with Regulation 6 of the Electricity (Applications for Licences and Extensions of Licences) Regulations 1990, at the Office of Electricity Regulation, Hagley House, 83-85 Hagley Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham B16 8QG. Copies are available for inspection from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. on any working day.
