NEWCASTLE-UNDER-LYME BOROUGH COUNCIL
The Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme (Newcastle Town Centre) Traffic Regulation Order 1996

Whereas the Borough Council of Newcastle-under-Lyme published on 16th September 1996, a notice of proposals for the above Order and following objections to such proposals a public local inquiry is to be held in connection therewith.   Notice is hereby given that, Mr. A. K. Potter, an Inspector appointed for that purpose will attend at the Council Chamber, Civic Offices, Merrial Street, Newcastle-under-Lyme, on Tuesday, 24th March 1998, at 10 a.m. to hold a public local inquiry into the proposed Order.   The proposed Order will enhance the provisions of existing traffic regulation orders by further reducing the likelihood of danger to the public, preventing damage and injury and facilitating the passage of pedestrians and vehicular movements in the town centre whilst preserving and improving the amenities of the area.   The effect of the proposed Order will be: (i)  Ironmarket, extend the pedestrian-only core period Monday to Saturday inclusive to 8 hours per day, 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. (ii)  Paradise Street, ban loading and unloading on the north side and extend the one-way operation from High Street to Friars Street. (iii)  High Street, ban loading and unloading between Hassell Street and Friars Street, during the period 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday inclusive. (iv)  Friars Street, provide additional disabled on-street parking on the north-west side. (v)  Merrial Street, prohibit loading and unloading on the north side between its junction with Fogg Street East and West. On the south side introduce a Bus Stop Clearway between Fogg Street East and West. (vi)  Red Lion Square, prohibit waiting and unloading on the emergency route into the pedestrian area from Church Street. (vii)  Liverpool Road, reposition the existing Bus Stop Clearway for a distance of 10 metres towards the Ryecroft.   Full details are contained in the draft Order which, together with copies of the Orders to be varied, a map showing the roads affected and a statement of the Council’s reasons for proposing to make the Order may be examined on enquiry at the Central Reception Desk at the address given below Monday to Friday inclusive, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. F.
