Transport and Works (Applications and Objections Procedure) Rules 1992 Baltic Millennium Bridge Order 1998 Notice of Application
Notice is hereby given that the Borough Council of Gateshead of the Civic Centre, Regent Street, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear NE8 1HH, has applied, to the Secretary of State for Environment, Transport and the Regions, at Great Minster House, 76 Marsham Street, London SW1P 4DR, pursuant to sections 5 and 6 of the above-mentioned Act, for an Order under sections 3 and 5 of that Act of which the following are concise particulars of the provisions contained in the draft Order: 1. To authorise the construction, maintenance and operation of the Baltic Millennium Bridge across the River Tyne, between the Gateshead Quays and the Newcastle Quayside. The bridge which rotates on its axis to allow the passage of maritime traffice, will provide a pedestrian and cycle route and will span a section of the river approximately 130 metres wide between the quay walls with a minimum headroom clearance, measured over a 30 metre wide navigable channel at the centre of the river, of not less than 25 metres above Mean High Water Springs, in the open position and 4.6 metres in the closed position. 2. To authorise the construction and maintenance of ship protection measures. 3. To provide for the opening of the bridge to maritime traffic for which a charge may be made. 4. To provide for the temporary possession of land in connection with the construction and maintenance of permanent and temporary works associated with the bridge construction subject to the payment of compensation. 5. To provide for the Secretary of State’s consent to be obtained for the construction of tidal works and to ensure steps are taken to prevent danger to navigation. Any person who wishes to make an objection to the application or otherwise submit representations about the proposals should write to the Secretary of State for Environment, Transport and the Regions, Zone 3/11, Great Minster House, 76 Marsham Street, London SW1P 4DR.
