SMOKE CONTROL AREA

The whole of the London Borough of Camden was subject to Smoke Control Orders made under Clean Air Acts in the 1950s and 1960s. There have been boundary changes which have brought new areas into the borough, which are not subject to Smoke Control Orders. The Council wishes to subject these areas to Smoke Control Orders. The Council of the London Borough of Camden proposes to revoke all existing Smoke Control Orders (see list below), pursuant to section 18 of the Clean Air Act 1993, and to make a new Smoke Control Order covering the whole of the area of the borough. This, like the existing Orders, will make it an offence to emit smoke from any chimney in the borough, subject to some exceptions. It will make it an offence, for example, to emit smoke from burning ordinary coal or wood on an open fireplace. This will have no new effect on the vast majority of properties unaffected by the boundary change and will only apply these new controls to properties becoming part of Camden as a result of the boundary changes. A copy of the Order may be inspected at the Environment Department, 5th Floor, Town Hall Extension, Argyle Street, London W.C.1, for at least 6 weeks from the date of publication of this notice. Within that period any person who may be affected may, by notice in writing, object to the making of the Order. Any objections made will be considered.
