BOUNDARY CHANGE OF BIRTLEY CONSERVATION AREA
1. Notice is hereby given that on 21 February 2003, the Borough Council of Gateshead designated the following revised boundary as an area of special architectural or historic interest within an area of Gateshead, which is known as Birtley Conservation Area. This revision included adding areas, which are considered to possess, special architectural or historic interest the character and appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance. Areas have also been removed which are not considered to possess special architectural or historic interest and which do not make a positive contribution to the character and appearance of the area. The area is briefly described in the Schedule to this notice and a plan showing the area in detail can be inspected at the offices of the Group Director Development & Enterprise, Head of Planning and Environmental Strategy, Civic Centre, Regent Street, Gateshead, Monday to Thursday between 8.45 am and 5.00 pm and Friday between 8.45 am and 4.30 pm. 2. Following this change to the designated area planning applications, which affect the character and appearance of the area, will be advertised and public comments will be invited before a decision is made. The Council will implement a policy to conserve and improve the amenities of the area. Trees in the Conservation Area are protected as if they were covered by a Tree Preservation Order and no trees can be cut down, topped, lopped or otherwise destroyed without the consent of the Local Planning Authority. 3. No building within the conservation area can be demolished without the consent of the Local Planning Authority. Advertisements are also subject to special controls in Conservation Areas. 4. Advice regarding all aspects of the Conservation Area is available from the Group Director Development & Enterprise, Head of Planning and Environmental Strategy, Civic Centre, Regent Street, Gateshead, during normal office hours. Schedule The boundaries of the Conservation Area have been drawn to include an area south of the A1 Birtley Bypass. The Conservation Area is an irregular shape comprising The Croft, Durham Road to the North, Uplands House to the East, St John’s Church, Birtley to the South and St Joseph’s R C Infant School to the West. The following properties are added to the Birtley Conservation Area.
