NOTICE OF AN APPLICATION FOR CONSENT TO CONSTRUCT AND OPERATE A FLUE GAS DESULPHURISATION (FGD) PLANT EXTENSION AT COTTAM COAL-FIRED POWER STATION IN THE DISTRICT OF BASSETLAW IN NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

Notice is hereby given that EDF Energy (Cottam Power) Ltd has applied under section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989 for the consent of the Secretary of State to construct and operate a flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) Plant Extension on land owned by EDF Energy (Cottam Power) Ltd at its existing Cottam power station, and for a direction under section 90(2) of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, that planning permission for the development be deemed to be granted. The FGD plant would be fitted to the remaining two non-FGD coal fired units at Cottam (referred to as the FGD Plant Extension) and reduce emissions of sulphur dioxide from these units by about 90 per cent. The plant would use the limestone/gypsum technology. The FGD Plant Extension would be located adjacent to the existing boiler houses and chimney. The plant would comprise of absorber towers and utilise the following common FGD systems currently being installed as part of the original FGD project; storage facilities for limestone and gypsum, rail loading and unloading facilities, limestone and gypsum processing plant, wastewater treatment plant and other ancillary plant. An Environmental Statement has been prepared, pursuant to the Electricity Works (Environmental Impact Assessment) (England and Wales) Regulations 2000. A plan showing the land to which it relates, together with the Environmental Statement, which discusses the development in detail and presents an analysis of environmental implications, are available for inspection by members of the public during normal office hours at the following addresses: Nottinghamshire County Council, County Hall, West Bridgford, Nottingham NG2 6BJ, and Bassetlaw District Council, Queens Buildings, Potter Street, Worksop, Nottinghamshire S80 2AH. Copies are also available for inspection at Retford Library and Gainsborough Library.
