THE TRANSPORT AND WORKS ACT 1992
THE TRANSPORT AND WORKS (APPLICATIONS AND OBJECTIONS PROCEDURE) (ENGLAND AND WALES) RULES 2000
THE OUSEBURN BARRAGE ORDER
NOTICE OF APPLICATION FOR AN ORDER RULE 14 (1)

The Council of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne, Civic Centre, Barras Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne NE99 2BN, has applied to the Secretary of State for Transport under section 6 of the Transport and Works Act 1992, for the above-mentioned Order under section 3 of that Act. The draft Order makes provision for tidal works on the Ouseburn, situated to the east of Newcastle city centre, comprising a tidal weir with the crest set at approximately the level of mean high water of spring tides, situated under Glasshouse Bridge, with a navigation lock alongside. The navigation lock will comprise a locka chamber 20 metres in length and 5 metres in width, with a guillotine-style raisable gate at each end. The works will include an eel pass, an access bridge across the weir, boat mooring facilities and associated structures. The aim of the works is to retain water in the tidal reaches of the Ouseburn at high tide level, in order to improve amenity, encourage regeneration of the lower Ouseburn valley and facilitate increased navigation of the Ouseburn. The Order would also authorise powers for the permanent acquisition of land, the permanent or temporary stopping-up of streets and other incidental, supplemental or consequential powers in relation to the works. Any objections to, or other representations about, the proposals in the application should be sent to the Secretary of State for Transport, c/o The Transport and Works Act Orders Unit, Zone 9/02, Southside, 105 Victoria Street, London SW1E 6DT on or before Friday 24 December 2004. An objection or representation MUST (i) be received by the Secretary of State on or before Friday 24 December 2004, (ii) be made in writing, (iii) state the grounds of the objection or representation, (iv) indicate who is making the objection or representation and (v) give an address to which correspondence relating to the objection or representation may be sent. The Secretary of State may make objections and other representations public and will copy them to the applicant for the Order.
