DALTON CONSERVATION AREA
PLANNING (LISTED BUILDINGS AND CONSERVATION AREA) ACT 1990

Notice is hereby given under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Area) Act 1990, section 69, that the Borough Council of Barrow-in-Furness has determined that the area described in the Schedule to this notice is an area of special architectural or historic interest and the character of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance and has therefore designated this area as a conservation area. This notice replaces all previous Dalton-in-Furness Conservation Area designation notices. The effect of the designation of the conservation area is as follows: 1. Conservation area consent will now be required for the demolition of all unlisted buildings (other than excepted buildings) in the area. 2. Planning applications for development which would, in the opinion of the local planning authority, affect the character or appearance of the conservation area must be given publicity and representations received as a result of the publicity must be taken into account in determining the application. 3. It becomes an offence subject to certain exceptions to cut down, top, lop, uproot, wilfully damage or wilfully destroy any tree in the area except with the consent of the local planning authority. 4. The local planning authority is now under a duty to formulate and publish proposals for the preservation and enhancement of the area. A map of the conservation area may be inspected, free of charge, during normal office hours at the office of the local planning authority at the Town Hall, Barrow-in-Furness and at the Town Hall, Dalton-in-Furness. Schedule Land within the Dalton Conservation Area, Dalton-in-Furness, shown edged red on the attached plan, the boundary of which is described as follows : The boundary runs west along the northern boundary of 14 Skelgate and then turns south following the rear garden boundaries of 4-14 Skelgate, where it turns west following the garden boundary of 2 Skelgate and then south following the rear garden boundaries of 2 Skelgate and 1-2 Castle Street. It then runs along the western garden boundary of 7 Skeldene Close where it turns north following the eastern boundaries of the woodland until Buccleugh Street. The boundary runs westwards through the woodland and then south along the western boundary of the woodland until it meets the access road between Underwood Terrace and the rear of 2-6 Underwood Terrace. The boundary then turns west running along the rear boundary of 15 Goose Green. At the edge of the outbuilding at the rear of 15 Goose Green it turns south-west to the mid point of the access road from Underwood Terrace to the rear of 2-6 Underwood Terrace in line with the north-west edge of the boundary of 16 Goose Green. From this point it runs west to the edge of the grassed open space on the west of Underwood Terrace. The boundary runs south-east along the eastern edge of Underwood Terrace, turning east south-east along the southern boundary of the gardens to the front of 10-14 Goose Green. It then runs east along the front boundaries of 6-9 Goose Green turning south-east along the front boundaries of 1-5 Goose Green to the mid point of Barrow Road. The boundary then runs north-east along the mid point of Barrow Road until it is parallel with the boundary wall to the north of Poaka Beck at Bow Bridge. It then turns east following this boundary to the rear of 14-16 Market Street and north-east to the rear of 18-36 Market Street and then south-east along the rear boundary of the Co-op supermarket. The boundary then follows the east and north-east boundaries of the Co-op supermarket and the southern and eastern edge of the building to the rear of 52-54 Market Street. It follows the rear garden boundaries of 56 a -66 Market Street until the south-eastern corner of 66 Market Street where it turns south-east along the rear boundary of 68-76 Market Street until the north-west corner of 29 Garden Terrace. It then tracks north along the western boundary of 2 Garden Terrace turning east along the northern boundary of that same property. It then runs north and then east to the rear of 78 Market Street before turning south to the rear of 25 Garden Terrace. It runs eastwards along the rear of 23 Garden Terrace in a straight line until the north-west corner of Station Road. The boundary then runs south in a straight line along the western boundary of 5 Station Road until it comes to the south-west edge of 7 Station Road. It then runs south-east following the boundaries at the rear of 7-37 Station Road turning north-east along the south-eastern boundary of 37 Station Road to the mid point of Station Road itself. Turning south-east the boundary runs along the centre of Station Road, turning north-east along the centre of Beckside Road and then north-west along the rear boundary of the Conservative Club and the north-eastern boundary of the bowling green. It runs eastwards following the northern boundary of the bowling green and Havendale and the northern boundary of High Beckside. It then follows the western boundaries of Willowbank and the western, northern and eastern boundaries of Lyndon House up to its junction with the rear of 138 Market Street. Tracking east it follows the rear boundaries of 138-152 Market Street and 19 and 20 Tudor Square and north along the eastern boundary of 19 Tudor Square and then eastwards again following the rear boundaries of 16 Tudor Square to 14 Ulverston Road until the centre of Dale Terrace. Tracking north the boundary runs between 16 and 17 Ulverston Road and extends until the car park. It then turns westwards along the southern boundary of the car park to the centre of Broughton Road where it veers south-west to the north-east corner of 10 Tudor Square and runs along the outside wall of that property continuing north-westwards and then westwards to encompass the land at the rear of 1-10 Tudor Square. It runs along the western boundary of 18 Hall Street and then westwards along the rear of 151-155 Market Street, dropping southwards along the western boundary of 151 Market Street and then westwards along the rear boundaries of 147-149 Market Street. Following the western boundary of 18 Hall Street until the mid point of the alleyway between 4-6 Cleator Street, the boundary goes west following the mid point of the alleyway until the middle of Cleator Street. It then goes in a south-easterly direction down the centre of Cleator Street and west along the rear boundaries of 131-141 Market Street, crossing Slater Street to the south-easterly corner of a plot of land to the rear of 6 Hall Street. Turning south down the eastern edge of Slater Street it then follows the rear property boundaries of 103-121 Market Street and the rear boundary of the Masons Arms pub at 101 Market Street. Tracking east the boundary runs along the southern edge of 36 Fell Croft and the eastern garden boundary of 97 Market Street. It then runs along the rear garden boundaries of 91-5 and the eastern garden boundary of 87 a Market Street and the rear boundary of 79 a and the rear garden boundaries of 75-79 Market Street. It then follows the southern, eastern and northern boundaries of 2 Rowlinson Place, continuing north along the rear garden boundaries of 6-10 Nelson Street and east along the edge of 10 Nelson Street crossing Nelson Street itself. It runs along the western and northern and eastern boundaries of the Old Garage to the rear of the Wellington Hotel, Market Street, and then down the centre of the alleyway between Wellington and Nelson Streets and then tracks east following the rear of 55-61 Market Street. The boundary then runs north to the rear of 1-5 Wellington Street and then west to the south-easterly corner of the area of land to the rear of 51 Market Street. It proceeds north along the western boundary of Wellington Place turning west to the south of the buildings opposite 1-2 Wellington Place, tracks north along the edge of the most western of these outbuildings and then west in a line until the north-west corner of the rear garden boundary of 35 Market Street. Dropping slightly south the boundary then runs west following the southern boundary of 2 a and 2 and The Orchard, Chapel Street, and then north along the western boundary of The Orchard until its juncture with Sunny Garth, Chapel Street. It then follows the rear garden boundaries of Sunny Garth, The Shieling and Fairhaven on Chapel Street and the northern boundary of 5 Kings Drive and then along the southern boundary of 9 Kings Drive. It continues in a straight line until the western boundary of Kings Mount where it tracks northwards following the boundary of 4 Kings Mount until the western boundary of 5 Kings Mount until the entrance to Baldwins Yard which it crosses, following the southern and then the western boundaries of Hillhaven, Kings Drive. It then traces the southern and western garden boundaries of Waldyn, Croft Gardens and down the north-western garden boundary of 27 Skelgate, crossing Skelgate to arrive back at the north-eastern corner of 12 Skelgate.
