THE CITY OF WESTMINSTER (PRESCRIBED ROUTES) (NO. 8) TRAFFIC ORDER 2008

1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that Westminster City Council on 11th June 2008 made the above Order under sections 6, 22C and 124 of and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended by the Local Government Act 1985 and the Civil Contingencies Act 2004.

2. The City of Westminster (Prescribed Routes) (No. 8) Traffic Order 2008 is an Anti-terrorism Traffic Regulation Order and has been requested by the Metropolitan Police to support the police security operation in Downing Street in order to prevent potential terrorist acts against visitors, workers and residents in the vicinity.

3. The general effect of the Order will be to:

(a) prohibit vehicles and pedestrians from entering or proceeding in Downing Street at all times, except those authorised by the police;

(b) prohibit pedestrians from entering or proceeding in that area of the footway forming the boundary between Downing Street and Whitehall, except those authorised by the police; and

(c) allow the police, at their discretion, to prohibit pedestrians from entering or proceeding in certain parts of Whitehall adjacent to the Cabinet Office, the boundary with Downing Street and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

4. The Order, which will come into force on 13th June 2008, and other documents giving more detailed particulars of the Order are available for inspection between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Mondays to Fridays inclusive at West One, 59 Buckingham Gate, London SW1E 6AJ, until 23rd July 2008.

5. Any person desiring to question the validity of the Order or of any provision contained therein on the grounds that it is not within the relevant powers of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 or that any of the relevant requirements thereof or of any relevant regulations made thereunder have not been complied with in relation to the Order may, within six weeks from the date on which the Order were made, make application for the purpose to the High Court.
