NOTICE OF APPLICATION FOR CONSENT FOR THE PURPOSES OF SECTION 88

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN in accordance with Schedule 10 of the Water Resources Act 1991 that applications have been made to the Environment Agency by United Utilities Water plc to vary the existing Consents to discharge sewage effluent to The Solway Firth from:

• Glasson Wastewater Treatment Works, Wigton, Cumbria (017680455) – 283m3/day of secondary treated sewage effluent and storm sewage at NGR NY 26120 60420

• Port Carlisle Pumping Station, Wigton, Cumbria (017680456) – storm sewage and sewage in an emergency at NGR NY 24110 62470

• Bowness-on-Solway Pumping Station, Wigton, Cumbria (017680457) – storm sewage and sewage in an emergency at NGR NY 22510 62900

Bowness-on-Solway and Port Carlisle Pumping Stations contain the following facilities designed to minimise the frequency, duration and effect of the discharges:

• 38 m3 storage at Bowness-on-Solway PS and 44.9 m3 storage at Port Carlisle PS for the sewage effluent in the event of storm or emergency

• Discharges screened to 6mm

• Telemetry alarm to give notification of failure of breakdown of the pumping stations

• Facilities to install a mobile generator in the event of electrical failure

• Stand-by pump in the event of failure of the duty pump

• Tanker access to enable removal of sewage by tanker when necessary

United Utilities Water plc hold existing Consents to discharge from Glasson Wastewater Treatment Works, Port Carlisle Pumping Station and Bowness-on-Solway Pumping Station. These applications are to change the location and diameter of the outfall pipes, and the amount of flow that is passed forward by the pumps at Port Carlisle and Bowness-on-Solway Pumping Stations.

A copy of the application may be inspected free of charge at the Local Environment Agency office at Environment Agency, Public Register, Ghyll Mount, Gillan Way, Penrith 40 Business Park, Penrith, Cumbria, CA11 9BP between the hours of 9 am and 4.30 pm Monday to Friday (not Bank Holidays).
