The September 2025 company insolvency stats for England and Wales have been published by The Insolvency Service, together with related figures for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Company insolvency statistics for England and Wales – September 2025

After seasonal adjustment there were 2,000 company insolvencies in September 2025. This was 2% lower than in August 2025, but 2% higher than September 2024. The decrease of 2% compared to August 2025 is less than the average absolute change of 11% between consecutive months over the past three years.

In September 2025 there were:

  • 1,578 creditors’ voluntary liquidations (CVLs)
  • 281 compulsory liquidations
  • 124 administrations
  • 17 company voluntary arrangements (CVAs)
  • 0 receiverships

CVLs

In September 2025, CVLs accounted for 79% of all company insolvencies. The number of CVLs was similar to both August 2025 and September 2024.

Compulsory liquidations

The number of compulsory liquidations was 9% lower than in August 2025, but 17% higher than in September 2024.

Administrations

The number of administrations was 2% higher than in August 2025, but 17% lower than in September 2024. However, the average monthly number of administrations so far in 2025 is slightly lower than the 2024 monthly average.

CVAs

The number of CVAs was 6% higher than in August 2025 and the same as September 2024. Numbers remain low compared to historical levels. CVAs are not seasonally adjusted due to low volumes.

Receivership appointments

There were no receivership appointments in September 2025. Receivership appointments are now rare with only four in the past 12 months ending September 2025.

Insolvency rate statistics for England and Wales – September 2025

The company liquidation rate in the 12 months to September 2025 was 52.9 per 10,000 companies on the effective register in England and Wales. This corresponds to 1 in 189 companies entering insolvency.

Company insolvencies by industry in England and Wales – September 2025

The three industries (in accordance with SIC 2007) that experienced the highest number of insolvencies in the 12 months to September 2025 were:

  • construction (3,934 insolvencies, 17% of cases with industry captured)
  • wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (3,710 insolvencies, 16% of cases with industry captured)
  • accommodation and food service activities (3,365 insolvencies, 14% of cases with industry captured)

Company insolvency statistics for Scotland – September 2025

The Accountant in Bankruptcy (AiB), Scotland’s Insolvency Service, administers company insolvency in Scotland.

In September 2025 there were 103 company insolvencies, which was 41% higher than the number in September 2024. Of the total company insolvencies in Scotland, there were:

  • 50 CVLs
  • 48 compulsory liquidations
  • 5 administrations
  • 0 CVAs
  • 0 receivership appointments

Historically, compulsory liquidations were the most common type of company insolvency in Scotland. However, since September 2020, numbers of CVLs have remained higher than numbers of compulsory liquidations.

Company insolvency statistics for Northern Ireland – September 2025

In September 2025 there were 28 company insolvencies in Northern Ireland, which was the same number as in September 2024. Of the total company insolvencies, there were:

  • 15 compulsory liquidations
  • 10 CVLs
  • 2 administrations
  • 1 CVA
  • 0 receivership appointments
